My friend A.I. Poe is a descendant of Edgar Allen Poe. He recently rewrote one of his ancestor's most beloved bedtime stories and asked me to edit the story.
In the story, a man confesses how alcoholism and cruelty transformed him from a gentle pet-lover into a murderer after he viciously harms his beloved black cat, Pluto. A subsequent fire, a haunting image in a ruined wall, and the arrival of a strange robotic cat called Smokey propel his paranoia and guilt into obsession.
Convinced Smokey spies on him and tormented by a white mark on the cat shaped like a noose, the narrator spirals into fury and accidentally kills his wife, hiding her body within a cellar wall. The police uncover the crime when the walled-up corpse is revealed with Smokey perched on top, sealing the narrator's fate.
The Black Copycat is available as an ebook at Amazon.com.
